Though this recording is not properly released by the band as an album, it can be obtained from the addresses at the end. This is one of the tightest and most power-packed performances you’ll ever hear from a 3-member thrash band in India and so I thought I’d better share the experience with you so that you can procure and not miss a good band at their best! Threnody literally meaning "songs of grief" is a B’lore based metal outfit and performed this November at NLS which comprises of Siddharth "Havoc" Naidu handling the vocals and bass, Premik on lead guitar, and Satish "The Earthquake Man" on the drums. Threnody hadn’t tasted much success in the past and entered the NLS rock competition with jittery legs but broke the shackles as they demolished 20 other bands to reach the finals. Playing in the rain on the day of the finals, these guys didn’t lose their nerve and played one of the most blistering performances till date. Playing their hearts out that evening they started off with Kreator’s "Golden Age" which was a near perfect cover. Inspite of having a single guitarist their sound was still very amazing. Next in line was their chance to pay homage to thrash gods Slayer with them playing a Slayer cover "I’m Gonna Be Your God" which showed Satish’s immense talent of slamming the skins and Siddharth’s cool stage presence. Next up was their original titled "Unto The End" dedicated to the war victims of Kargil. It’s a long song with some excellent tempo changes and has a cool solo too. Siddharth shows off his bass skills too, playing a little piece "Manowar" style. This song was ideal as it showcased all the 3 band members as accomplished musicians having complete control over their instruments. The track is a complete killer with the high quality of lyrical content making it even more enjoyable. Next up, these Kreator loyalists dished up "Phobia" from Kreator’s ’97 Outcast. Another well executed song with the band showing no signs of fatigue with Siddharth’s voice as loud and full of energy as ever. After that was to follow Motorhead’s "Orgasmatron" but they covered it Sepultura style and no one I’m sure will disagree that Siddharth sounds like Max on that one. According to me the highlight of Threnody’s performance that evening. Finishing off their set with their version of Rolling Stone’s "Paint it Black", making it faster and at least 10 times thrashier and heavier these B’lore boyz really killed the NLS crowd. But inspite of being so tight these guys suffered and couldn’t win pole position that night was most probably due to the lack of a second guitarist with these solos sounding a bit hollow. Siddharth’s vocals are simply of international standards and I cease to wonder how along with playing the bass he kept singing a one constant level throughout the performance showing no signs of fatigue any time. The whole unit functions very well with excellent double bass drumming by Satish and good leads by Premik and is definitely of international standards. If we were in a country where rock really sold then these guys would be raking in millions. But I guess that’ll take a very long time to happen and till then people like me with all their naivete will get the chance to express their views about such great bands.
