The Death Metal fan base can be seen as an extremely strict Shaolin temple, where there are rigid rules which must be followed by every student and if they try to do something new then it is seen as something that is blasphemous and an attack on tradition. In Death Metal too, Fans praise bands that follow the age old traditions set up by pioneers like Suffocation, Morbid Angel whereas bands which try and do something completely new with the genre are mostly scoffed at (Deathcore). Seldom has innovation in the genre been acclaimed. Exhumation is definitely a band which deserves this acclaim.
Exhumation is a super group of sorts consisting of members from Scribe and Pin Drop Violence. The band consists of Aditya (Vocals) Prashant (Guitars, also in scribe) Rohit aka P-man (Bass, Pin Drop Violence) and Yash(Drums). Like Undying Inc. Exhumations music is both modern and extreme, however unlike Undying Inc. their music clearly falls in the Death Metal genre. But then again they add a lot of different elements to their sound that are polar opposites of the band’s music. They mix the intensity and technique of bands like Hate eternal and Behemoth with modern forms like Djent and Groove Metal, which makes their sound quite unique and reminds me of bands like Mnemic, Strapping Young Lad, Decapitated and to some extent Meshuggah when it comes to the guitar solos. A good example of their modern sound would be in the track Absolute Power Now where Aditya does pig squeals to Djentish, Groove-ish guitar riffs, which is something I have not heard before and is usually done in Slam and Brutal Death Metal. It could have gone horribly wrong but sounds as Brutal as it would if this was a Slam album, probably even more. Exhumation’s sound is technical, yet extremely heavy at the same time with massive guitar riffs being the focus of the band’s sound, however underneath all of that you can hear some atmospheric guitar work too, which is there throughout the album but is more prominent in the title track.
So when all is said and done, I can only say that Consider This is a fantastic album that is not afraid to try something new and break a few rules but at the same time stays pretty close to its roots. This is really something that is loud, intense and completely original and definitely be considered a benchmark in Death Metal. (9/10)
