Demigod’s Slumber of Sullen Eyes is yet another hallmark of the ancient Finnish Death cult that gave birth to its contemporaries like Demilich’s Nespithe and Amorphis’ Karelian Isthmus. Staying true to the Finnish sound that puts a lot more emphasis on a deeper guitar tone with very low sounding bass guitars, Demigod’s magnum opus is an unadulterated mix of raw brutality with darker atmospheric over an increasingly linear structure. And with this the mystical nature of the dark cosmic presence is exemplified though its apathetic, disillusioned melodies without any hints of duplicity.
The album charts its course with a pummeling groove and chunk riffing style, that almost resembles Bolt Thrower’s groove patterns while simultaneously using some excellent dual guitar harmonies that perfectly underlines the dominant riff on the forefront. While the guitar tone is indeed deep, it also tends to let off a cold, shrill note that adds to the somber nature of the album. Now picking an individual brilliant song is totally out of question as all the songs somehow merge into each other on a grand note to scale a whole new cosmic crescendo where chaos and order seems totally undifferentiated. That’s Slumber of Sullen Eyes summed up for you.
The vocals are plain use of guttural style while the drummer utilizes his kit intelligently with savage doses of ferocity that his noticeable in his snare work and pulverizing use of double kick to back up the melodies. The use of keys somehow seems out of place, and is something that could have been done without. On the whole though, Demigod display great musicianship and superior songwriting skills to fill the aural landscape with dark atmosphere where one finds that more prominence has been given to dynamic tempo shifts over maintain constant pace, to keep in touch the with the context of mystical meaninglessness.
