1998- ‘In breeding the anthrophagi’, ‘Of what’s to come’ -2008.A decade of brutal death metal that remains supreme, relentless & untouched. And to add to the goodness quotient best (‘Reduced to ashes’, ‘Mark of the legions’ & ‘Crown of souls’) released on their home label, uniquleader.
Probability of ardent fans not liking ‘Of what’s to come’ at first listen, is quite high. A couple of reasons for this are-1.A lot of tempo breakovers and lead playing. 2-A deliberate attempt on groove build up. Although both aspects are new to Deed’s playing style, but they work very well! .And I think they have improvised at the right time.Because, I feel the band was getting monotonous, with each passing album. The dimensions have stretched especially considering the previous record ‘Crown of souls’, which concentrated on power, ferocity, tempo, speed, leading to a single objective- prey carnage.
A grey psyched intro leads you to things on track 1’Waters of space’, lead playing loops in and makes it greyer. A minute into the song riffs jump over you with a purpose to eat you out. Erik’s vocals are an anthem for the listener’s demise. (The detailed description about the same shall follow) Guitar tone continues to desecrate on track 2 & 3’Eradication pods’ & ‘Unearthy invent’ Structuring is very electric, superflowous and is a rendition of what we heard on ‘Reduced to ashes’. The latter of the two songs has a ‘dying fetus’ signage attached to it, pinch harmonics take you to a skid n slam arrangement. And disintegrating-integrating guitar overture with Erik’s dry larynx overcast a dry spell.
Title track ‘Of what’s to come’ destructs in sessions, first one is a natural rapid (refer to white water-rafting) of dissected riffs which act very mean, second is a rhythm that’s more like a lizard lynching insects following its own direction, third are riffs that are stronger than built of a tank., then we have leads to peel off your skin-the playing gives an impression of a surgeons job-sharp, methodical & progressive. This track is not only a complete track rather it’s a complete trip!
Track 5 & 6 ‘Vivrum’ & ‘Century of vital’ are similar to ultra fast Canadian death metal played by cryptopsy and kataklysm.Nevertheless, the thump factor on a’ deeds’ album is miles ahead. Therefore the damage to the ears is collateral, courtesy ‘Erland’s’ bass. There’s another factor I would like to mention that has got due attention from the band that’s drag factor. I mean the ability to pull the songs off the traditional time spans that averaged below current one. ‘Harvest temples’ 7th track on the album does a lot of summersaults, ranging from speeds on a turbine blade in a dam to a chaosphere of lead wraparounds on python guitars. Its lethal and its pure metal!
A solid tombstone is laid by final 2 tracks ‘Dawn of the next’ & ‘ Infecting them with falsehood’ where total autonomy lies with riffs to turn vocals, leads, bass and drums their way. That’s an ability possessed by very few bands, but not considering ‘Deeds of flesh’ in this league shall be a crime.
Your cd rack must have ‘Of what’s to come’ on top of your already kept ‘Deeds’ cds.
