Another old school classic, listening to Screams of Anguish instantly makes you realize that Brutality indeed were one of the pioneers of technical death metal. Now this is one genre I strictly try to avoid due to the over excessive display of instrumental wankery even its not required to express your feelings. But these guys excel in this field by striking a fine balance between crunchy old school riffs and harmonizing twin guitar melodies which they cleverly incorporate into their progressive song structure without letting go of that classic Floridian death metal sound.
Listen to the opening track ‘These Walls Shall Be Your Grave’’, which by the way is an excellent opener and you’ll know what I mean. In Screams of Anguish you will get a big sack full of beautifully crafted solos which are cleverly interplayed between the two guitarists in almost every track in the album. The solos sound perfect with the multiple time signatures put in the song narration that waltzes around with a subtle beauty before fading to nothingness. The album charts a brilliant progress through its entire course where the solos at high tempo compliment the riffs at slower tempo, which has a very doom-ish tinge to it. While all this time the drummer is not allowed a single inch of space to breathe as he furiously pounds on the drum without any effort going between beats of monstrous proportion at faster tempo to lucid ones at slower tempo. An effort well worth appreciating.
The songs also have an added extra atmospheric tone around it which does well in making you reflect upon your own thoughts of deepest anguish and angst. But the use of the keys in the interludes plays a major killjoy to such moments. But there’s nothing to frown about it, because the rest of the tracks more than make up for it for its excellently crafted composition. The album isn’t overly produced; in fact it is produced at none other than the legendary Morrisound Studios so. Overall the band succeeds in playing crushing music to match up to their motto: Music to mangle your mind
