Arch Enemy’s latest ‘Rise of the tyrant’ marches on with that philosophy. Its essentially built over the elements of ‘Wages of sin’ & ‘Anthems of rebellion’. A lot of polished rebellion is torched through songs like ‘Rise of the tyrant’ and ‘Revolution’ both songs are made of piercing guitars, triggering base drums, hate filled vocals, all these act like perfect recipe for endless aggression. Whereas songs like ‘I will live again’ (track 3) are refined more melodic and have a classic thrash metal touch to them, to add to this you have songs like ‘In the shallow grave’ and ‘The day you died’ which are quite conventional in solo placement and have heavy metallish riffs, complimented by lyrics like ‘the day you died, my tears ran dry’ giving an overall vibrancy to the record.
All these metaphors make the latest album much more listenable than the previous one or for that matter ‘Anthems of rebellion’.’Intermezzo liberte’ (track 8) is a metal instrumental reminding you some classic stuff from the ‘Testament’ catalogue, very dinghy and inviting. ‘ The great darkness ‘is one of my personal favorites from the album it has that dark crocodile riffing that slams, crawls and swallows big, in addition to this is an operatic chorus, and a Van halenish solo that’s utter bliss. Final track ‘Vultures’ flies past picking meat, asking for more. Very carnivore and disturbed in nature. Nevertheless a great finish.
With this album Arch Enemy is ‘Circle of the tyrants’. Get in the ring.
