UK based doom/death metal band, Eye Of Solitude, recently released their sophomore full length ‘Sui Caedere’. We spoke with vocalist Daniel Neagoe about the album, UK’s doom scene and more.
Greetings!!!! I’ve been exploring some doom metal and found out about you guys a couple of months back…..so lets start off with a bio guys tell us about your history….. What theme in life has really influenced the band to come out with a name such as “EYE OF SOLITUDE” ?
Eye Of Solitude, at the time, was unanimously favored, circumstances or not. It represents a personal rebirth, but in one’s solitude, in emptiness, a high contrast of what one might think the name represents. Personally i describe Eye Of Solitude as being the sole center of loneliness, when you want loneliness. A total hazard towards something inexplicable and devious, malevolent but beautiful at the same time.
SUI CAEDERE Latin which stands for “To Kill Oneself” this being your second full length Album can you tell me the concept on which the album is based and how was it different from your previous album
Indeed that’s what it means. We’ve chosen the album title thanks to one of my good Romanian friends “Dod Priest”. The concept is quite simple, suicide is one of the most supreme gestures that one can do to themselves. Whether it be physical or psychological, suicide is the utmost inhibition that exists in all forms. That’s why,for us it has been extremely easy to work with this concept. We don’t really want to fall into that category where most people wouldn’t be easily mislead by the actual title.
Each track in this album has some unique element of doom for example the first track starts off with crows wailing in the intro which takes the listener into a gloomy trip. How did you guys come up with such melancholy ideas.
When you’ve been doing music for a long time and you’re pretty familiar with the idea that music itself must (and I stress the word “must”) come from the heart, it’s pretty easy to build music based on what you feel.Otherwise, for us, it makes no sense. You can make music, no doubt, especially nowadays. We just try to express our deepest feelings into what we put down on paper. Our spirits are one with the music we create. There’s no other way for us. We will never release an album just for the fun of it.
Now Moving onto your Achievements can you tell us about where have u guys performed till now …..also what are your plans for future gigs
We have had the pleasure to play with bands such as Decemberance (Greece), Saturnus, Esoteric (UK), Ophis(Germany) and so on. We’ve played a couple of festivals and a few gigs here and there. We haven’t got a large “live” CV,we don’t go “out” much haha. For the future,we have an European tour planned and have been confirmed for a doom festival that takes place in Holland, but we’re waiting for the organizers to announce it officially.
There has been pretty good doom metal scene in UK also Electric Wizard gods of stoner doom are from the same sub-continent .Talking about Stoner doom and various sub genres under doom metal what motivated you guys from getting into such a genre and how was the response of folks from the local metal scene there.
Yes, some of the sickest bands come from the UK,needless to enumerate them. For us it just came out this way. From material to material,we’ve added bits and pieces that fit in quite nicely with our music and so on. The based genre would be doom, with death metal variations, but as we see it biased genres are not really our thing. We wouldn’t call us doom, or death or anything else,in essence it is all metal.
Can u tell us something more about the songwriting process I mean how you guys compose stuff and also what are the major influences that has driven you to make such doomy/deathy stuff…also Right from April 2010(the year you were formed) has there been any major line-up changes in the band and how has that affected the songwriting
The songwriting is the easiest part ha ha,usually songs roll out on a regular basis,we’ve never had time to record all our ideas, mostly because we write a lot. No matter the idea,we all listen to it and bring it our individual contribution. There are 2 main writers in the band, but as I said, we all bring our contribution and mostly,instrument-input. It’s our strongest point,as we don’t finish recording one material and we already start working on the very next one
So what all efforts had u guys put in to promote SUI CAEDERE before it was released on 25th of June 2012.Apart from promotions can u highlight details related to the production of the album….like details about the artwork design and also about Recording,Mixing,Mastering.
We have done all in our power to promote the album digitally in collaboration with our label,we’re out to release our first official video clip, and preparing for some serious concerting, and we hope to bring EOS to more and more people. We have a serious album, with a monster length of 72 minutes, relentless and full of surprises. The artwork belongs to Giannis Nakos of Remedy Art to whom we are extremely grateful and to whom we’d like to thank deeply and recommend! Mixing and mastering has been done by our own Indee Rehal Sagoo (EOS lead guitars)
When did u guys sign up with KAOTOXIN and how has it helped the band in till now.
We signed with the french label Kaotoxin a couple of months ago, besides being good friends, Kaotoxin has been the best choice for us and honestly we could not be more happier. It does help in many ways, first of all being signed with a serious label gives the band professionality, seriosity and consciousness. There are no more decisions taken only by the band themselves, there are no more accents of slacking off, everything changes and it changes in the best way possible. Kaotoxin for us are our best friends and our label.
We would like to know more about the band members their hobbies/Interests apart from composing doom metal and all other projects you guys are involved apart from “EYE OF SOLITUDE”.
All of us play in other bands that have nothing to do with doom, for example I play in Unfathomable Ruination (brutal death metal), Indee, our guitarist plays session guitars for various artists, our drummer plays in Cythraul and Nebukadnezza (death and thrash metal) so we’re pretty caught up in other projects too. It’s all good and energizing, and obviously gives the guys the freedom they need.
We’d like to thank you for the opportunity of the interview, and we invite everyone to listen to our full album streaming for free right here http://kaotoxinrecords.bandcamp.com/album/sui-caedere keep supporting true metal \m/
